Rex Irwin Spurlock, 88, of Black River, died Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Alpena. Rex was born to James and Betsy (Mathis) Spurlock and grew up on a farm near Gainesboro, Tennessee. After graduation from High School he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. When he returned from service, he moved to Detroit, earned his Millwright certification and worked at General Motors. In 1959 Rex married Ruthanne Nachtwey. In 1970 the family moved to Black River and he began working at Abitibi. Rex was a loving husband and father who enjoyed gardening and carpentry and was an active member of his church and community. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, his four children Robert Spurlock, Edward (Carol) Spurlock, Lisa (Mary) Spurlock and Fern (Don) Ward, his brother James, two sisters Peggy and Susan and granddaughters Erica, Lauren and Denise. A son Rex Anton preceded him in death. Mr. Spurlock is at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln, where friends may call on Friday, March 22nd, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Visitation will continue Saturday, March 23th at St. Gabriel Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Rev Robert Bissot will officiate. Memorial donations suggested to Alcona Humane Society.
