Nyla Jean Holmes, 96, of Harrisville, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Alpena. Jean was born September 1, 1924 to Lloyd R. and Vera C. (Yakes) Rivers in Onaway, Mi; she was raised in Harrisville and Mikado. On June 3, 1943, she married Kenneth G. Holmes in Harrisville. Jean graduated from Harrisville High School and worked as a secretary for the Michigan State Cooperative Extension Office at the Alcona County Courthouse for many years. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. Jean is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Doug) Smith and Julie (David) Mills; her son, Gary (Deanna) Holmes; 8 grandchildren, Stacey Moran, Melissa Lundberg, Jesse (Rachel) Smith, Jill (Jeff) Wampler, Rebecca Vleit, Hannah (Chris Holden) Holmes, Cameron Holmes, and Clara Holmes; and six great grandchildren, Daniel and Cassidy Moran, Logan, Conner, and Colton Smith, and Willard Vleit. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Kenneth, on December 11, 2007; her brothers, Dale, Stanley, Forest, Ronald, Warren, and Norman Rivers; and her sisters Elsie Stone and Sharon Goul. Cremation arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln. A private memorial gathering will be planned in the future.
