Mikado

Melvin J. Ward, 88, of Mikado, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at his home.

Born May 13, 1936 to Harry and Blanche (Morrison) Ward in Harrisville, he was raised in Mikado. Melvin married Gertrude Fowler on February 12, 1955 in Killmaster. They were longtime residents of the Flint area. Melvin worked as a forklift operator at the SPO division of General Motors. He retired to Mikado in 1988. Melvin was an active member of the Solid Rock Church of God, where he served on the church council and was a member of the choir. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf, softball, baseball, and bowling, as well as watching the Detroit Tigers. He loved his yard, tending to his flowers and watching his birds. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Melvin is survived by his son, Melvin D. Ward, two daughters, Brenda (David) Hammon, and Patricia (Craig) Beins, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his dear lifelong friends, the Crannie Family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertie, on August 19, 2024, his daughter, Lucinda Ward, his great grandson, and five brothers, James, Floyd, Arnold, Kenneth, and Irven Ward.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 1:00 PM at Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln.  Pastor Wayne Ramey will officiate.  Memorial donations are suggested to the Solid Rock Church of God, or to Hospice Compassus.
