RICHARD D. THOMPSON, 82, died March 11, 2007, in Hobe Sound, Florida He was born in Spruce, Michigan in 1924 where he lived until 2003, when he moved to Alpena, Michigan. After graduating from Alpena High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Army with the 1549th Engineer Survey Platoon during World War II in New Guinea and The Philippines. He was a charger member of Spruce VFW Post 6754 and served two terms as Commander and one term as District 11 Commander. R.D. was the owner of Thompson Sales and Service in Spruce and later Alpena. He served as director of Michigan Auto Dealers Association and president of Michigan Equipment Dealers. He was an active public leader serving 17 years on the Caledonia Township Board, and 10 years on the Township School Board. Survivors include Earlene (Kingsbury), his wife of 59 years; son Kim Thompson (and wife Sharon) of Spruce, Michigan; son Glenn Thompson of Paynesville, Minnesota; daughters Lou Ann Prestegard (and husband Tom), and Terri Ortiz of Hobe Sound, Florida; grandchildren Elizabeth and Jeffrey Thompson, and Andrew Ortiz; sister Iva Cornelius, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be made to Spruce Presbyterian Church, 6230 Gillard Road, Spruce, Michigan 48762. Services will be held at Hobe Sound Community Presbyterian Church in Hobe Sound, Florida, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. A memorial service will be held in Spruce, Michigan at a later date.
