James Reed

January 24, 1935 — August 29, 2006

James Grant Reed lost his long battle with cancer on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at his home in Glennie. He was born January 24, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, to William and Vera Reed. He owned and operated Esquire Barbers in Toledo before moving to Glennie in 1967. He established the Log Cabin Barber Shop in Oscoda, Michigan when the Air Force Base was active there. The barbershop was an actual log cabin that he decorated with antiques, and was a busy gathering place for the Air Force personnel. It was said that when flying missions, many of the pilots used the Log Cabin Barbershop as code to identify what base they were from. Jim also had a barbershop in Glennie. He retired in 1982. He proudly served eight years in the United States Navy, and always flew the American flag at his home. He was involved in politics, served on the first zoning board in Curtis Township, and also served as an Alcona County Commissioner from 1983 to 1989. Jim built his home on Hunter’s Lake in 1965, and was a storehouse of information about the history of the lake. He was dedicated to the biological welfare of the lake and was proud of the achievements he made improving the quality of the lakes in the Glennie area, There was no place he would rather be than at his home on Hunter’s Lake. Jim and his wife, the former Pam Hubbell, enjoyed fishing and sailing on Lake Huron, and in the Gulf of Mexico near their winter home in Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, John Reed, and sister, Marilyn Reed. In addition to his wife of 35 years, Pam, he is survived by two daughters; Denise Perkins of Petersburg, Michigan, and Sandra Trout of Dundee, Michigan, two sons; William (Sheryl) Reed of Petersburg, Michigan, and Robert (Terese) Reed of Petoskey, Michigan, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Jim’s life will be honored at a private family memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Alcona Humane Society, 457 W.
