Shirley M. Hillert 79, of Spruce, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at her home. On August 19, 1927 she was born to Herbert and Evelyn (Jacob) Pettyplace in Saginaw, where she was raised. She married Alfred Hillert in Saginaw on October 16, 1948. They moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1949, and to in Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1962. They retired to Spruce in 1983. Shirley was a devoted homemaker, and was a founding member of New Life Lutheran Church in Spruce. Shirley was very active in the church, singing in the choir, and making cards for the church to sell. Her faith in God and commitment to the church were an inspiration to her family and friends. Alfred preceded her in death on August 13, 2003. She is survived by a daughter Judy (Vern) Scacci of Kildeer, IL; a son David (Debbie) Hillert of Alpena; three grandchildren, Jessica (Chase) Osbourne, Jennifer Hillert and Michelle Hillert; two great grandchildren Sophia and Bianca Silva. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 2nd, at 11:00 AM at New Life Lutheran Church in Spruce, with Rev. J. Douglas McCormick officiating. Memorial suggested to New Life Lutheran Church, or to Hospice of Michigan. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Spruce, at a later date. Cremation arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln.
