Hendrik W. De Vries

Hendrik W. “Hank” DeVries, 90, of Harrisville died March 5, 2010 at the Alpena Medical Regional Medical center in Alpena Born May 23, 1919 to Jan and Jennie (Rosema) DeVries in Toledo Ohio, he was a longtime Detroit resident. Hank retired from Ethyl Corporation after 25 years in the maintenance department. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, guarding the Atlantic Coast. He was a long time singer with barbershop quartets, and had been a member of the Oakland chapter, Grosse Pointe chapter, and Alpena chapter of barbershop quartets. He was a former member of the Besser Chorus of Alpena. Hank was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Hubbard Lake, and of its choir. He is survived by two stepdaughters; Rebecca and Janet, one sister; Jennie DeVries, of Vineland NJ, and two nephews; James and Gary Paulson. He was preceded in death by his daughter; Suzzanne, and sister; Jane Paulson. There will be a Memorial Service for Mr. DeVries at the Gillies Funeral Home in Harrisville on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery in the spring.
