John M. McGarry, 85, of Greenbush, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital. Born October 12, 1924 to Peter and Winifred (Regan) McGarry in Providence, Rhode Island, he was raised there. In 1942, John joined the United States Navy, and served aboard the USS Tarawa, in the Atlantic Theatre during World War II. In 1947, he married Barbara Barker, and they were residents of Lincoln Park, where John worked as a plumber with the Local 98 in Detroit. In 1988, John and Barbara retired to Greenbush. He loved the woods and wildlife, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking through the woods. John was a member of the Friends of the Harrisville Library, and worked hard to bring the new library to Harrisville. John is survived by his wife; Barbara, one daughter; Kathleen (Robert) McGarry-Collins, of Rochester Hills, one son; John C. McGarry of Lincoln Park, three grandchildren; Mallory McGarry of Dalton GA, Brent McGarry Collins of Chicago IL, and John Connor McGarry of Dalton GA, two sisters; Jean McGarry and Lillian (Warren) Chalmers of East Providence RI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister; Winifred Miley, and three brothers; Peter, Steven, and Francis McGarry. Cremation arrangements were handled by Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln.
