Winston S. Carpenter died at home on May 30, 2006. He resided near Lincoln, MI for fifty years. Born October 03, 1928 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan to Ralph and Vyreen Carpenter, Winston Stuart moved to Jonesville, Michigan where in 1945 he graduated high school. He matriculated at Michigan State College, then University, where he achieved a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, summa cum laude, in 1952. On October 11, 1952 Eva W. Cousins became his wife. Service in the United States Army Veterinary Corp was fulfilled in the next three years. Dr. Carpenter attended the Meat and Dairy Hygiene School in Chicago; was sent to Nairobi, Kenya for nine months as one of seven veterinarians working on exotic livestock diseases at the Kenya Department of Veterinary Services; then worked in bioresearch with the primate colony at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The Carpenters returned to their Veterinary practice in Lincoln, Michigan; moved their practice to the M72, Lincoln location in 1955; then moved the small animal clinic to Oscoda in 1967. They retired after 40 years. The son of teachers, W.S. dedicated himself to community service. He led scout troop 93 on canoe trips, Klondike derbies, and campouts with bean-hole-beans. He was a member of the Lincoln Lions. He served as secretary on the Harrisville Harbor Commission where he was a member for thirty years. He willing served the Lincoln United Methodist Church in most lay positions throughout his fifty years of membership; participated in the construction of the addition to the original structure; and has left his evident imprint throughout the structure and infrastructure. He was a member of the AVMA, MVMA, and NEMVA. W.S. enjoyed interacting with animals, any Jersey cow, and visiting with humans, especially sharing a good joke. A well-written poem, an intriguing book, a community theater production, church potluck dinners, visits with his colleagues (especially the class of ‘52), and family gatherings were favored recreations. He was happy interacting with nature, harvesting the woods, and sailing the waters. He looked forward to retirement travel and creating wooden projects. Ever the loyal alumnus W.S. supported MSU financially and spiritually, GO GREEN! His wife of 53 years Eva; a son Martin of Lincoln; a son Ralph, daughter-in-law Susan, granddaughter Catherine, and grandson John of Falmouth, Maine; a daughter Susan of Tawas City; a granddaughter Tracy, grandson Don, and their children of Dixfield, Maine; a sister Meredith Berryhill of Fort Dodge, Iowa; a brother Curt of Reading, Michigan; a brother Craig of Battle Mountain, Nevada; survive Dr. Carpenter. Visitation will continue at the United Methodist Church in Lincoln, on Sunday, June 4, at 12 noon until the funeral at 2. Rev. Travis Dewitt and Rev. Edward Seward will officiate.
