Violet Evelyn Sawyer

Violet Evelyn Scott was born in Thorndale, Ontario, Canada on April 22, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Georgina Pearl (Jones) Scott. Violet was a 1935 graduate of Thorndale High School. She married the late Kenneth Louis Sawyer on May 8, 1937. The couple shared in the birth of five children, and Violet cared for the needs of the family as a homemaker. Violet was a woman of great faith. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dearborn Heights and of Spruce Lutheran Church and of the WELCA (Women’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Association) in Spruce, Michigan. She daily read her Bible and did devotions to bring herself closer to her Lord. Violet often completed crafts; crocheted, quilted, knitted and tatted, providing scrubbies for church bizarres, and served on the funeral committees. Violet liked reading inspiring novels, enjoyed pinochle, gardening, and baking. Later in life, she often challenged her mind with word search, Sudoku puzzles, on-line games, Sudoku puzzles and was a big Tiger’s fan. Violet Evelyn Sawyer, age 101, passed away in Spruce, Michigan under the care of Hospice of Michigan on Thursday, July 6, 2017. In addition to her parents and her husband on October 16, 1998; her passing was preceded by three children: Gerald Sawyer, Evelyn Gutierrez, Tom Sawyer; sons-in-law: Allen Martin and Bob Gutierrez; and daughter-in-law: April Sawyer. To cherish her memory, she leaves two daughters: Connie Martin and Judy Sawyer; a daughter-in-law: Sandra Sawyer; ten grandchildren: Scott, Robert, Christine, Wendy, Kim, Tom Jr., Michael, William, Todd, and Tracy; fourteen great grandchildren: Sirena, Jacquelyn, Joseph, Justin, Brandon, Robert III, Andrew, Kelsey, Matthew, Makayla, Allyson, Amber, Lilly and Evan; five great-great grandchildren: Hannah, Cameron, Cash, Brooklynn and Sawyer. She will lie in state from 12:00pm until a Funeral Services at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Spruce Lutheran Church, 1246 East Spruce Road, Spruce, Michigan 48762. Pastor Leslie Nye will officiate. arrangements in Spruce by Gillies Funeral Home, 104 West Alger Street in Lincoln (989) 736-8195. Friends may also gather from 11:00am until 2:00pm, Monday, July 10, 2017 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street in Monroe (734) 384-5185. Private burial will take place on Tuesday at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock, Michigan. Memorials are suggested to Spruce Lutheran Church, the Wounded Warriors or Michigan Humane Society.
