Thomas A. Katona

November 20, 1950 — December 13, 2016

Thomas Arthur Katona, 66, went home to be with the Lord suddenly and unexpectedly December 13, 2016 at home in El Paso, Texas. Born November 20, 1950 in Harrisville, Michigan, Tom was the son of the late Arthur and Pauline (Stone) Katona of Glennie. He was a 1968 graduate of Alcona High School where he was top ten academically and participated as a four sport athlete. Tom attended Michigan State University as a walk-on athlete and was a club sport participant during his time in East Lansing. Throughout his life, Tom was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid fan of the Spartans as well as the Detroit Tigers. He enjoyed watching the Red Wings and occasionally cheered on the Western Michigan Broncos. He was a registered sports official in Michigan for over thirty years, and participated in men’s league baseball. He coached youth basketball and track in Alcona, as well as varsity track for Alcona High School. Through those experiences he was able to combine two interests; sports and mentoring young people. Most recently, he was able to share his knowledge and skills with his beloved grandson. Tom was also a master gardener. For many years he maintained his own garden and thoroughly enjoyed spending quality time with his mother. More recently, he shared his knowledge of gardening with others as a horticulture tutor. Tom was a devout Catholic, and he gained much strength and comfort through his strong faith. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Harrisville for much of his life and quickly made connections at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Texas. Thomas is survived by his two loving daughters, Sara (Chad) Wallet of El Paso, Texas and Jessica (Jeffrey) Chesney of McDonough, Georgia. Additionally, he is survived by his cherished grandchildren, Noah, Emerson, Nora, and Hadley. His daughters and grandchildren were truly his pride and joy. Tom is also survived by Roxanne Dixon, his former spouse and mother of Sara and Jessica, siblings, nephews, an aunt, several cousins, and dear friends. He was deeply grateful for those friends that stood by him and supported him. A private interment service will take place. Any information regarding memorial services will be provided at a later date. Expressions of condolence will be received by Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln.
