Bernita Rose (London) Sweet, age 87, of Mikado, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2009 surrounded by family at Munson Medical Center of Traverse City, MI. Bernita was born to Chester and Henrietta (Dougherty) London on September 5, 1921, in Mikado MI. She married the love of her life, Irwin E. Sweet on December 10, 1938 in Harrisville MI. They were blessed to be able to celebrate 70 years of marriage with family and friends in December. The couple started farming Irwin’s grandfather’s farm, and milked cows for many years. After retiring, Irwin and Bernita enjoyed travelling. In Bernita’s dearest moments, you could find her cooking, baking, or crocheting, or simply spending time with her grandchildren, whom she truly adored. She was a phenomenal woman who will be missed by all that were blessed by her love. Bernita is survived by her loving husband, Irwin, eight children; Barbara Martuch of Mikado, Charlie Sweet of Grand Junction CO, Irene (Jim) Hartman of Oscoda, Cathy (Clifford) Travis of Mikado, Jeannie (Tom) D’Angelo of Kenner LA, James (Jenny) Sweet of Mikado, Debbie (Karl) Thum of Mikado, and Sandy (Russ) Scannavino of Metairie LA, 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, one sister; Maxine Haggadone of Glennie, and one brother; Chet London of Washington State. She was preceded in death by 5 sisters; Lorraine Hughes, Audrey Whitbrodt, Doris Walker, Elanor Collins, and Claudia Prior, and one brother; Jack London. Mrs. Sweet is at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln, where visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 7, from 4 until 9 pm. Visitation continues on Wednesday, April 8, from 11 am until the Funeral Service at 12 noon. Memorial Donations suggested to the Alcona County Commission on Aging.
