Joseph T. Gauthier, 88, of Black River, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at his home. Born August 10, 1925, to Telesphore and Valerie (Potvin) Gauthier in Black River, he was raised there. Joe served in the United States Navy as a Gunner’s Mate during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. On February 1, 1947, he married Loraine Potvin. Joe worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator, and was a member of the Local #824. In 1952, he moved to Harrisville, where he resided until moving back to Black River in 1973. Joe was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church of Black River, and of its Men’s Club, and of the William Moore VFW Post #6754 of Spruce. He was also a skilled carpenter, who enjoyed spending time in his woodshop. Joseph is survived by his wife, Loraine, four sons; Robert (Gloria) of Murfreesboro TN, Allen (Lya) of East Tawas, Ronald of Harrisville, and Kent (Bonny) of Lincoln, six grandchildren, Michelle (Shane) Herron, Jerusha (John) McDonald, Nichol (Craig) Johnston, Nathan , Amber and Ethan Gauthier, eight great grandchildren, and two great great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kecia Gauthier on July 22, 2010, six sisters, and four brothers. Mr. Gauthier is at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln, where friends may call on Thursday, January 30, from 4 until 8 pm, with a Parish Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M, and a VFW Chapel service at 8:00 P.M.. Visitation will continue on Friday, January 31, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Black River from 10 am until the funeral mass at 11:00 A.M., Rev. Bob Bissot will officiate.
