Mary Smith, 96, of Alpena passed away Friday, February 29, 2008 at Sally’s Care Home in Alpena. Mrs. Smith was born on December 1, 1911 in Glennie to Nicholas and Josephine (Yanek) Kalinich. She became a primary school teacher and was a longtime resident of Barton City. Mrs. Smith taught in Alcona County elementary schools over 40 years before retiring and moving to Alpena. There she was a member of and sacristan at St. Bernard Catholic Church for 28 years. Mrs. Smith is survived by her brother Joe (Betty) Kalinich of Alpena , her sister Anna Fisher of Yuba City, CA and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude, four brothers; Peter, Daniel, Steven and George, and a sister Lena Andres. Visitation will be Monday March 3, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Alpena, from 5-8 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. led by Fr. James Kendziorski. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Joseph Graff on Tuesday, 12 noon, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Burial will be at Twin Lakes Cemetery, Lincoln. Mrs. Smith’s arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln, MI.
