Una Marjorie Merkel Mikazes, 75, of Mikado, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at her home. Born February 25, 1937, to Leo and Melissa (Nevin) Merkel in Mikado, she was a lifelong resident. Una married Alfred S. “Mike” Mikazes on June 21, 1962. A devoted homemaker, she enjoyed farming and canning. She especially enjoyed cooking, and worked for many years as a local caterer. She loved the Detroit Tigers, and listening to polka and country music. Una was a lifetime member of the Mikado Goodfellows, serving for 39 years. Una is survived by her son, Joel (Dawn) Mikazes of Harrisville, two grandchildren, Hannah and Antavius Mikazes of Harrisville, two sisters, Mary Swartz of Mikado; and Karen Merkel of Oscoda, four brothers, John (Barbara) Merkel of Harrisville; Richard Merkel of Detroit; Ronald (Yvonne) Merkel of Brighton; and David (Donna) Frayer of Stockbridge, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, on February 1, 2012, her sister-in-law, Ann Merkel, and her brother-in-law, Elihu Swartz. Mrs. Mikazes is at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln where visitation will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 3 until 9 pm with a Parish Prayer service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Mikado from 10 am until the Funeral Mass at 11 am. Rev. Bob Bissot will officiate. Burial will be in St. Raphael Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Memorial donations suggested to the Mikado Goodfellows.
