James J. Sefernick, 84, of Alpena, formerly of Spruce, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Tendercare Alpena. He was born May 14, 1928 to Louis and Philomena (Siefker) Sefernick in Flint, MI, where he was raised. Jim was a fire fighter with the Flint Township Fire Department, retiring in 1978 as the Assistant Fire Chief. He was also an EMT in Flint Township, and worked toward the start of ambulance service in the area. He was a member and former president of the Genesee County Fire Chiefs Association. He also volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, and with Big Brothers. In 1978 he moved to the South Shore of Hubbard Lake and on August 10, 1979, he married Lynn (Yerian) Muzzy. Jim was a member of the South Shore Hubbard Lake Fire Department and the Hubbard Lake Baptist Church. Jim spent 12 years repairing fire trucks throughout the State of Michigan. They spent winters in Silver Springs Florida, where Jim was an active member of the Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist Church. Jim was a master of all trades, who would tackle any job, and could fix anything. He enjoyed being able to help his family and friends. Jim’s pride and joy was a 1931 Model A Fire Truck that he restored and was proud to display in the local parades. Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn, one son, Jim (Kellie) Sefernick of Spruce, two daughters, Tammy Sefernick of Oscoda; and Maryjane Sefernick-Cox of Mayville, four stepchildren, Vicki (Stan) Gadd of Corunna; Myla Sue (Roger) Bodary of Bangladesh; Beth (Joe) Rzepecki of Byron; and Rick (Norma) Muzzy of Corunna, 16 grandchildren, Sydney; Megan; Natalie; Larry; Madison; Nichole; Heather; Kevin; Megan; Brianna; Nathan; Joshua; Courtney; Emily; Cory; and Tyler, two great grandchildren, two sisters, Helen Perez of Saginaw; and Rita Robertson of Burton, one brother, Bud Sefernick of Swartz Creek, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Sefernick, three sons, Johnny; Larry; and David Sefernick, his first wife, Maryjane Bea Sefernick, three brothers, Larry; Joseph; and Paul Sefernick and two sisters; Pauline Bentoski and Marie Sefernick. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 12:00 P.M. at Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. Cremation arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln. Memorial donations suggested to the South Shore Hubbard Lake Fire Department or to the Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist Church Care and Share.
