Daniel L. Bruce, 101, of Harrisville (Gustin Twp.) died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 in Midland. Dan was born March 12, 1906 in Mikado to its founder, Daniel Duncan Bruce and Mary (McGillis) Bruce. Raised in Mikado, he helped on the construction of Footesite Dam and later was employed by the Dodge Brothers of Detroit. Dan married Mildred Fowler on July 11, 1942 in Harrisville. They were residents of Alpena from 1945 until moving to Harrisville in 1970. He served in the Army 19th Coast Guard Artillery during WWII. Dan was employed for 41 years with the Michigan State Highway Department where he was foreman in the sign shop. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Duane Bruce in 1954 and his wife Mildred on Nov. 1, 2004. Dan was a life member of the American Legion Post 274, a member of the 40 and 8 Voiture of Oscoda, a charter member of the Mikado Goodfellows, a member of the Ossineke Eagles Aerie 3762 and a former member of the Lincoln Lions. Survivors include his daughter, Mary (Eldon) Dean of Midland, and two grandsons, Todd Alan Dean and Eric Charles Dean. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Sadie Crofoot, Mary McVeigh, Christine Burnham and Katherine Martin; and two brothers, Wallace Bruce and Duncan Bruce. Visitation will be Friday, December 21, 2007 from 2- 8 P.M. at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 P.M. at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Springport Cemetery, Harrisville. Memorials suggested to Mikado Goodfellows or Hospice of Michigan, Northeastern Region.
