Kenneth George Holmes, 86, of Harrisville passed away December 11, 2007 at Jamieson Nursing Home with his family at his bedside. Kenny was born July 3, 1921 in Haynes Township. He was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1941. He met his future wife at the “Roller Skating Hall” in Lincoln and later married Nyla Jean Rivers on June 3, 1943 in Harrisville. He was a farmer at heart but left the farm to work on road construction. He followed the construction for 30 years and joined Local Operating Engineers Union 324 and was a member for 57 years. He enjoyed playing baseball with the Harrisville, Mikado and Barton City teams. Many times traveling from the southern part of Michigan to play a game on Sunday. His other enjoyment was watching the Alcona High School boys and girls basketball teams, often voicing his disagreement on a referee’s call and receiving a stern look from the official. He is survived by his wife Jean of 64 years; his daughters Kathy (Doug) Smith of Harrisville, Julie (Dave Mills) Holmes of Mikado and son Gary (Deanna) Holmes of Grand Blanc, Michigan; eight grandchildren, Stacey Moran, Missy (Luke) Lundberg, Jesse (Lisa) Smith, Jill (Cody) Peck, Becky Vliet, Hannah, Cameron and Clara Holmes; three great grandchildren, Danny and Cassie Moran and Willard Vliet; one brother Riley (Willabelle) Holmes of Denton, TX and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mae Holmes, three brothers Eddie, Jim and Herbie and two sisters Ida and Alice. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 P.M. on Friday, December 14, 2007 at Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln, where the funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00 P.M, Rev. Tedd Galloway officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment of ashes will be in the spring at Mt. Joy Cemetery. Memorials to the family or the Alcona Basketball Association.
