Jayne Marie Peterson, 73, of Oscoda died on Friday, May 6, 2011 at home. She was born August 5, 1937 in Owosso, Mich. the daughter of Fredrick William and Arlene Janette (Parmeter) Strawsine. From 1951 to 1959 the Strawsine family spent summers on the Great Lakes with their homeport in East Tawas. She started deer hunting in 1953 at the age of 16 in the Curran area and enjoyed that tradition with her family through last year. She graduated from Corunna High School in 1955 and attended Michigan State University for one year. She graduated from Ferris State College in 1957 with an associate degree in business. She married Steve Peterson in 1956 at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Corunna, Mich. They resided in Big Rapids, Mich., and moved to East Tawas in 1957. After moving to Iosco County Mrs. Peterson worked as a bookkeeper for many businesses over the years including Huron Supply, Jerry’s Marina, Jefferson Trucking, Capitol Business Service and Straits Aggregate. In 1966 the couple moved to Oscoda and started Resort Advertising, a commercial printing business. She was the company’s bookkeeper. In 1980 she formed JMP Bookkeeping and was a bookkeeper for area businesses, including the Alcona County Review, until retiring in 2003. Mrs. Peterson was the first woman to solo a single engine airplane out of the Iosco County Airport in 1965. She owned several American Quarter Horses and showed them across the state, including the Breeder’s Cup, in Detroit, Mich. for approximately four years in the early 1970s. She served as treasurer on the board of directors for the Michigan Council of Cooperative Preschools for four years and for the International Council of Cooperative Preschools for two years. She served as the treasurer for St. John Episcopal Church in Oscoda for 17 years. She had been a member of the Oscoda Yacht Club since 1981 and served as treasurer of the club’s auxiliary for eight years. She was the treasurer for the board of directors, manager and employee supervisor of the Huron Forest Community Greenhouse in AuSable Township from 1984 to 1990. She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women in Iosco County and of the Oscoda Garden Club. Mrs. Peterson is survived by one daughter, Cheryl (John Boufford) Peterson of Harrisville; one son, William (Susan) Peterson of Sheridan, Mont.; one sister, Sally Janssen of Oscoda; one nephew, Mason (Debbie) Hall of Clarksville, Tenn.; one niece, Phyllis Zimmer of Traverse City, Mich.; two great-nephews, Calvin and Branden Hall; two great-nieces, Natalie and Alecia Zimmer; and two cousins, Sharon Brehmer of Bath, Mich. and Charles (Kristi) Robins of Freeland, Mich. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope St. John Episcopal Church, 223 E. Mill Street, Oscoda. The Rev. G. John MacDonald will officiate.
